Mathematician Vladas Sidoravicius dies at 55

The mathematician Vladas Sidoravicius passed away at 55, this Thursday (23), in Shanghai, China, where he was a deputy director at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University Shanghai (NYU Shanghai).

A Lithuanian naturalized Brazilian, Sidoravicius was a full professor at IMPA from 1999 to 2015, when he moved to China. Marcelo Viana, IMPA’s director general, commented on the early death of the mathematician.

“It was a surprise and a shock to all of us. Vladas was a great researcher, he still had much to contribute to Mathematics. He will be remembered at IMPA for a long time, for his work and his personality”, said Viana.

Sidoravicius graduated in Mathematics from Vilnius University (Lithuania) in 1985. In the following year, he earned his master’s degree also in his native country. He did his doctorate at Moscow University (Russia) from 1986 to 1990. At the Heidelberg University (Germany) and Paris Dauphine University (France), Sidoravicius completed two postdoctoral fellowships from 1991 to 1993.

“In his brilliant career, Vladas Sidoravicius wrote more than one hundred scientific articles and organized several high-level events in Brazil and abroad. His contribution to Brazilian mathematics is invaluable”, wrote professor Bernardo Nunes Borges de Lima, from the Department of Mathematics at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), who was tutored by Sidoravicius at IMPA.
