The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) is a research institution and a graduate school connected to the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and Ministry of Education (MEC).

Founded in 1952, IMPA has a mission of developing advanced research for pure and applied mathematics, continuing academic education with postgraduate courses and promoting the dissemination of mathematical knowledge.

The research includes mostly the areas of dynamic systems, probability, computer graphics, fluid dynamics, among others, and has a scientific body of more than 40 researchers. Also develops research at the laboratories Visgraf and Fluid and at Centro Pi, aimed at the productive sector.

In academic education, IMPA offers postgraduate courses in master’s, doctoral and professional master’s degrees, in addition to continuing education programs for mathematics teachers.

Mathematical knowledge is disseminated through the OBMEP – Brazilian Public Schools Olympiad and through math popularization events, such as National Mathematics Festival.
