Ph.D. Thesis

Preparation of the thesis is supervised by a member of the staff at IMPA, who may or may not be the same professor who advised the student on his study program. The Ph.D. thesis is the main requirement for obtaining a Ph.D. degree.

Once the thesis is prepared, the student is required to submit a typewritten copy to the Graduate School Office. The Graduate Council then appoints a Final Doctoral Examining Committee to deliberate on the merits of the thesis. If the committee votes favorably, the doctoral candidate makes a final public oral defense of the thesis and is subjected to questioning from the examining committee members.

Questions directed at the candidate on the subject of the thesis are welcomed from members of the Graduate Faculty as well.

Once approved by the examining committee, the candidate is required to submit five final typewritten copies of the thesis to be filed in the Graduate Records Office.
