Jorge Sotomayor
He obtained the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics at the Universidade Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru and his doctorate at IMPA.
He was a professor at the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Engineering (Lima) and at the University of California (Berkeley) and Associate Professor at IMPA until his retirement.
He is the author of several research works on the Theory of Bifurcations of Differential Equations and his work is considered pioneer in the modern approach of this area. It works on the interrelationship between Dynamic Systems Theories and Singularities of Differentiable Applications. He enthusiastically disseminates the work of R. Thom’s Catastrophe Theory.
