ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Elon Lages Lima
Elon Lages Lima, was born in Maceió, he started his college studies in Fortaleza, obtained a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, obtained a Master and a Doctor (Ph.D.) degrees at The University of Chicago.
He was researcher emeritus of the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA), to where he was linked since his graduation as a fellow scientific initiation.
His area of greatest interest is topology, having started with algebraic topology, and then devoting himself to differential topology.
He was a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Director of IMPA and President of the Brazilian Mathematical Society. He was a moderately fanatical supporter of the soccer team Fluminense, besides that his only other interest was writing expository books on mathematics.
