This book is based on the text  Álgebra: um Curso de Introdução, published in this same Series which text has undergone extensive revision and evolved into this new text.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Arnaldo Garcia

He was born in Valença, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, on May, 1st, 1950. In 1970 he was admitted at  the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), where he studied electronic engineering and graduated in mathematics. He obtained his Master’s degree (1976) and PhD (1980) at the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA). His career in mathematics is entirely at IMPA,  where  he works as a Full Researcher.

He had  a fellowship of the prestigious  Alexander von Humboldt Foundation on two occasions (Heidelberg/1987 and Essen/1990) and is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences since 1998. His main interests are in number theory and algebraic geometry, specially  on algebraic curves over finite fields. He published several research works on these fields.  He  participated actively in various national and international symposia.

He is a  lover of the Brazilian music, especially of samba-choro, and he is a strong supporter of the Estação Primeira da Mangueira samba school. He  is one of the few remaining supporters of the America soccer club in Rio de Janeiro.

Yves Lequain

Yves Lequain is  French from Lille, where he began his studies in Mathematics, which he finished in the United States, obtaining his PhD at the University of Louisiana, in Baton Rouge. He came to Rio de Janeiro in 1970 to spend one year; having discovered the sun (unknown to the residents of Lille), he stayed  to enjoy it. His research area is commutative algebra.
