Mathematician Fernando Torres dies at 58

Today, May 28, 2020 at 4:15 am, we wake up and receive with the news of the death of the mathematician, writer, mentor, colleague, teacher, advisor, supervisor, but above all, friend Fernando Eduardo Torres Orihuela, known in the mathematical world as Fernando Torres, at 58 years old. IS impossible to describe in words the feelings that surround us in this instant.

Fernando Torres was born on June 22, 1961 in the city of Tarma, department of Junin, Peru, having completed his teaching in that city elementary school in the Niño Jesús schools in Prague and San Vicente de Paúl. Posteriorly, already in the capital Lima, finished high school at Santo Tomás de Aquino school, as well as an undergraduate (1985) and a master’s (1988) in Mathematics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Moving to Brazil, concluded the doctorate (1993) at the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), under the guidance of Professor Arnaldo Garcia. Joined as a teacher (1998) at the Instituto de Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing at the State University of Campinas (IMECC / UNICAMP), becoming Full Professor at that institution in September 2015.

He devoted much of his life to research in the field of Algebraic Geometry, mainly on topics related to Algebraic Curves on Finite Bodies, leaving a huge legacy to the scientific community. We express our deep gratitude for each moment that we were able to live with this that was, and certainly remains, a great example for all of us.

To Fernando, that wherever he is, he can receive from each one of us the thoughts of the most sincere and eternal recognition. Sincerely: Fernando’s family, friends, students and alumni.
