Energy Optimization - OE21 & WI21
Industrial Workshop on Energy Optimization WI21
“Design of Pricing Mechanisms for the Brazilian Power System”
São Paulo – SP, March 18 – 19, 2021
&
Advanced School on Energy Optimization OE21
“Mathematical challenges of power systems in an era of energy transition”
Ubatuba – SP, March 21 – 27, 2021
Education and research connected to the Energy Transition are areas of high importance worldwide. The development of such activities in cooperation with industry creates enormous value for society.
The Advanced School on Energy Optimization OE21 will explore issues arising in the energy markets of today and the future, educating people that will be central in this transition, from the industry as well as mathematicians, engineers and business leaders. OE21 promotes the multidisciplinary training of excellence with the goal of forming a critical mass of future decision makers in the energy sector.
The Industrial Workshop WI21, to be held after the school, will provide a forum for practitioners to discuss the main challenges faced by the Brazilian power system when integrating renewables.
OE21 and WI21 are activities of TACEMM, the Trans Atlantic Consortium on Energy Market Modelling, jointly organized with
- CEPID CEMEAI
- IMPA
Topics
- Hourly prices and unit-commitment: the Brazilian experience
- Models for short-term analysis of energy systems
- Capacity and flexibility markets
- Optimization, risk, and equilibrium models for power markets
Important drivers that motivate these subjects are: the need to invest, plan and use flexibility options to manage intermittency and uncertainty in energy systems, analyzing how consumers can take an active role in energy markets and distributed energy systems. At the same time the main objectives for the energy sector are reduced carbon emissions with increased reliability while keeping the monthly electricity bills affordable for the end-user. These issues are of high importance in many countries, and there are clear synergistic opportunities in more extensive knowledge exchange, targeting a cross-disciplinary approach that integrates economics, engineering, mathematics and optimization.
