XI Brazilian Workshop on Continuous Optimization

UFAM, Manaus, AM, May 22 – 27, 2016

The XI Brazilian Workshop on Continuous Optimization will take place in Manaus, (UFAM) in the Amazonas state, north of Brazil, from May 22 to 27, 2016, celebrating Carlos Humes Júnior’s 70th birthday. Subjects to be discussed encompass theoretical, computational and implementation issues, in both linear and nonlinear programming, including variational inequalities, complementarity problems, nonsmooth optimization, vector optimization, generalized equations, optimization in manifolds etc.

Brazil Health Care and Vaccinations

There is no reciprocal health agreement with the UK or USA. Full insurance is strongly recommended as medical costs are high. The standard of medical care is generally very good in major towns and cities.

Public health care services in Brazil are free of charge, but may only be used by foreign tourists in the event of an emergency. In the event of a medical emergency, call 192 for an ambulance.

Water: Tap water should not be drunk unless boiled or sterilised first. Bottled water should be drunk instead.

Other risks: Dengue fever (which is more prevalent after rain in densely populated areas): Be sure to take the usual precautions, stocking up on mosquito repellent, sunscreen lotion and wearing suitable clothing.

** A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from all travellers, minimum 10 days before traveling; and also required from travellers, over nine months old arriving from infected regions. Vaccination is strongly recommended for those intending to visit some rural areas.

Practical Health Information:

Zika Virus

How transmission occurs?
The Zika virus is transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

What are the symptoms?
The main symptoms of the disease caused by the Zika virus are intermittent fever, skin rash, itching and muscle pain. According to the Dr. Rosana Richtmann (infectious disease specialist), the good news is that the virus Zika is much less aggressive than the dengue virus: there is no record of deaths related to the disease. The evolution is benign and the symptoms usually disappear spontaneously over a period of 3 to 7 days.

What are the known prevention measures?
As the Zika is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti, the same mosquito that transmits dengue and chikungunya, prevention follows the same rules applied to these diseases. Use repellent helps to keep mosquitoes away, avoiding bites, but it is important to remember that the product should be reapplied every 6 hours for its effect to be maintained and it must contain a chemical called DEET. In addition, although there is no official confirmation that there is risk of sexual transmission of Zika (this is being studied), but some experts recommend the use of condoms for at least two weeks during recovery from illness.

How is it treated?
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for the disease. According to Ministry of Health, the cases should be treated with the use of paracetamol or dipyrone to control fever and pain. As the dengue, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) should be avoided because of the increased risk of bleeding.
The Zika virus is not contagious, so it is not transmitted from one person to another. The only way to get the virus is by being bitten by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The virus can pass from mother to child during pregnancy causing a serious condition called microcephaly, but there is also the suspicion that the Zika can be transmitted through breast milk, causing the infant to develop the symptoms of Zika and also through contact intimate without a condom, but these hypotheses are not confirmed and appear to be very rare.

Additional Activities

THE SCIENCE GROVE PARK

Inaugurated on April 1st 1995, The Science Grove Park´s opening celebrated the 40th anniversary of the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA). It consist of about 32.000 acres situated at the Ecologic Green Corridor on the mid-west of Manaus urban area. The main objectives of the Science Grove are to develop and promote INPA´s program for technologic, scientific and innovatory vulgarization of Amazonian topics and to offer a leisure option to local population that may contribute to cultural education and environmental awareness.
Some of its attractions are the Log-core Home, the Culture Store House, the EcoHouse and the Indian House.
