Project “Outstanding Talents in Mathematics”
The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) is open to applications for a Postdoctoral Scholarship under the project “Outstanding Talents in Mathematics: Gaps and Barriers in Career Paths in Brazil”.
The project aims to develop, disseminate and evaluate media-based interventions to inspire more inclusive mathematical performance on a large scale, through the Brazilian Public School Mathematical Olympiad (OBMEP).
The scholarship will have an initial duration of 12 months, and may be renewed for up to two additional periods of equal duration (totaling up to three years). The monthly amount is R$ 10,000.00 (without bench fee), for full dedication.
The work will be carried out mostly remotely, with face-to-face days at IMPA negotiated with the project coordination. IMPA will provide adequate workspace for these days.
Description of activities
The postdoctoral fellow will work in:
- Literature review;
- Supervision of research fellows;
- Data management and analysis;
- Writing academic articles;
- Collaboration with the team in the implementation of data collection plans;
- Support in administrative tasks.
Requirements
- PhD in Economics, Computer Science, Statistics or related areas, with interest in the areas of Education Economics, Labor Economics and/or Public Sector Economics;
- Experience in database management and statistical/econometric analysis with STATA (or R, with availability to learn STATA);
- Proficiency in LaTeX/Overleaf;
- Fluency in English, with experience in writing academic articles.
- The postdoctoral fellow will not be required to teach classes at IMPA or associated institutions.

Deadlines and selection
The deadline for submission of applications is August 29, 2025. Proposals will be evaluated by a committee appointed by IMPA’s Olympiad Management, taking into account the academic experience and the compatibility of the candidate’s profile with the project’s activities. If necessary, interviews will be conducted with the shortlisted candidates. The final result will be announced during the month of September, for immediate start.
