The program
The Program for the Improvement of High School Mathematics Teachers – PAPMEM, created by the mathematician from Alagoas Elon Lages Lima, aims to improve the training of high school mathematics teachers throughout Brazil.
It has been held for more than 30 years by IMPA and has the participation of institutions and professors from all federative units of Brazil. Since its inception, PAPMEM has benefited thousands of teachers from all over the country. This program resulted in a series of books especially aimed at high school teachers, published by the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM).
Modalities
There will be two types of participation to be defined at the time of application. See the descriptions below and select the option you want.
Participation
The teacher who selects this option will attend this edition only remotely. The teacher must access IMPA’s YouTube , watch the classes posted daily (27 to 30/01), solve the 6 exercises proposed each day and send the answers on the same day by electronic form, which will receive via email registered in our institutional system. At the end of this edition, the teacher will be entitled to the certificate of participation if he/she submits, within the given period, the 4 forms and obtains 2/3 (or more) of correct answers.
Participation with performance
The teacher who selects this option will attend this edition in a hybrid way. The teacher must appear in person, on 01/31 (Friday), at the place selected at the time of application to take the test, in addition to accessing IMPA’s YouTube and watching the classes posted daily (01/27 to 01/30), solving the 6 exercises proposed each day and sending the answers on the same day by electronic form that will receive via registration email in our institutional system.
Evaluation in person
When choosing the modality of participation with performance, the candidate must select the center where he wants to take the face-to-face test. IMPA will inform the coordinators of the name and email of the approved candidates for each center. The coordinator of the center will pass on to the selected candidates, via email, information such as location, room and time of the test. The selected candidate must go in person to the campus informed by the local coordinator to take the test on Friday of the week of the event.

More information
- From Monday to Thursday, 02 lessons will be made available at 09: 00 on IMPA’s YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@impabr
Every day at 09:00, Brasília time, the list of exercises and the answer form will be sent to the e-mail address registered on the system. The form must be answered within 24 hours, Brasília time, of each day. This response will count as attendance and therefore a certificate will be issued.
If any students have questions about the subjects, they should send them in by Thursday 25/07/2024 at 2pm for the teachers to analyze. The selected questions will be answered on Friday 26/07.
In-person evaluation of the edition
- The face-to-face assessment will take place on 26/07, from 9:00 to 10:40 a.m., at the location chosen by the teacher at the time of application.
The teacher’s score in this modality will be the sum of the number of correct answers to the daily questions (maximum of 24 points) and the discursive test score (maximum of 76 points). If this score is greater than or equal to 60, the teacher will be entitled to a certificate of participation with performance and their score will be recorded on the certificate.
