Improvement Program for High School Mathematics Teachers
IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, July 24-28, 2017
Program coordinator: Eduardo Wagner
The Program for the Improvement of High School Mathematics Teachers – PAPMEM consists of free training for mathematics teachers from all over Brazil. It has been held since 1990 addressing issues related to High School.
The program is carried out for a week full-time, from 9 am to 5 pm, independently in the months of January and July, during the school break.
Each of the program’s modules is carried out simultaneously at IMPA and at partner institutions across the country. We currently have about 70 centers and 3,000 participating teachers. At IMPA we have 150 students per module. The lectures are taught in the morning and transmitted live, via the Internet, from IMPA to the participating institutions in other states, using the infrastructure of the National Education and Research Network (RNP). In the afternoon, directed studies are carried out supervised by teachers from each center.
This program resulted in a series of books especially aimed at high school teachers, published in the Mathematics Teacher’s Collection of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM). In another phase, which was supported by the CAPES-FAPERJ program, the books entitled The Mathematics of High School – vol. 1, vol. 2 and vol. 3 were produced.
