Professional Development Program for High School Mathematics Teachers

IMPA, Rio de Janeiro, January 22-26, 2018

Program Coordinator: Eduardo Wagner

The Professional Development Program for High School Mathematics Teachers – PAPMEM – consists of free training for mathematics teachers throughout Brazil. It has been running since 1990, covering topics related to high school education.

The program runs for one week full-time, from 9 am to 5 pm, independently during the months of January and July, during the school break.

Each module of the program is conducted simultaneously at IMPA and partner institutions throughout the country. We currently have approximately 70 centers and 3,000 participating professors. At IMPA, we have 150 students per module. Lectures are given in the morning and broadcast live via the internet from IMPA to participating institutions in other states, using the infrastructure of the National Education and Research Network (RNP). In the afternoon, supervised guided studies are conducted by professors from each center.

This program resulted in a series of books specifically designed for high school teachers, published in the Brazilian Mathematical Society's (SBM) Mathematics Teacher Collection . In another phase, which was supported by the CAPES-FAPERJ program, the books entitled The Mathematics of High School – vol. 1 , vol. 2 and vol. 3 were produced.
