- Preliminaries
This program aims to offer free training to high school mathematics teachers from all over the state of Rio de Janeiro. It has been carried out in various forms since 1990, covering subjects relating to the three grades of secondary school. Lately, this program has received support from CAPES – Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior.
This program resulted in a series of books especially aimed at secondary school teachers, published in the Mathematics Teacher’s Collection of the Brazilian Mathematical Society. It is safe to say that this collection represents the best reference available in Brazil for training secondary school mathematics teachers.
Most of the first books in the collection were the result of the first phase of the program, which took place in 1990-1993, with the sponsorship of VITAE, and which trained around 800 teachers from all over Brazil. Each of the books from this project is dedicated to a high school subject. The following titles are available:
In another phase, with the help of the CAPES-FAPERJ program, the books entitled A Matemática do Ensino Médio – vol. 1, vol. 2 and vol. 3 were produced. As the name suggests, they are organized in such a way as to cover the material for one of the high school grades. In addition to the care taken with the concept and the critical view of each subject, present in all the books in the Collection, the books in this new series are closer to the classroom, discussing the teacher’s attitude when teaching each subject and giving suggestions for their performance. There is a constant concern to give teachers the tools to demonstrate the relevance of what they teach, relating the topics to each other and to applications.
- Program breakdown
- Course Organization
The program is carried out in independent modules, covering selected topics from the three high school grades and some topics from elementary school. In each module, activities take place during school breaks in January and July.
- Training development
The group to be trained will include 150 teachers in the state of Rio de Janeiro and between 50 and 100 teachers in the multiplier centers at universities in all Brazilian states. Each module consists of full-time training (from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for one week. Each day’s activities consist of lectures in the morning and group work in the afternoon.
- Course Organization
- Location
Each of the program’s modules will be held simultaneously at IMPA and at partner institutions across the country. The lectures will be broadcast live via the Internet from IMPA to the participating institutions in other states, using the RNP infrastructure. Participating teachers will be able to send their questions during the lectures using a chat program. The afternoon activities will be conducted locally.
