The lack of connection between mathematics education and students' lives contributes to the critical results in educational assessments such as PISA, observes Marcelo Viana, director-general of IMPA, in an interview with the newspaper Zero Hora. A report published in the newspaper seeks to understand the reasons behind the poor performance of Brazilian students in tests that measure aptitude with numbers.

According to Viana, the negative consequences of the disconnect between classroom activities and students' daily lives can be seen in all sectors of society. Besides compromising access to the job market, it distances young people from professions linked to, for example, technology, which are considered the most successful today. "There is data from PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) showing that less than 4% of 15-year-old students in Brazil have the mathematical fluency required for technological professions. That's sad," laments the director of IMPA.

However, there are those who manage to break away from the routine and offer an education that brings the student closer to mathematics.
