Workshop combines Combinatorics, Geometry and Number Theory

An event that unites the areas of Combinatorics, Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory began this Monday (24) at IMPA. Organized by the institute's researcher Eduardo Esteves, the workshop “Combinatorial synergies in geometry and number theory” will investigate theoretical and computational aspects of the areas, in addition to improving combinatorial methods in the study of geometric and arithmetic structures.

This is the first time the workshop has taken place at IMPA. However, the synergy between the areas has been the subject of debate on other occasions, such as in the thematic program on algebraic geometry in 2015, and at the ICM 2018 (International Congress of Mathematicians). Both initiatives were spearheaded by researcher Oliver Lorscheid (University of Groningen, Netherlands), who is one of the speakers at this edition.

“Things have evolved since then. The results are very recent; it’s a very new theory with such rapid development. This meeting is the perfect opportunity for us to follow this and bring this theory to Brazil as well, to stay informed about what’s happening. At this event, our goal is to present new theories, bring together people and researchers from all over the world so that we can talk and collaborate,” explained Esteves.

The workshop has nearly 80 registered participants, including researchers, early-career mathematicians and specialists, to improve combinatorial methods in the study of geometric and arithmetic structures. The event runs until next Friday (28).

Recently awarded his doctorate by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Átila de Sousa is at IMPA for the fifth time to participate in events and academic exchanges. “This is an opportunity to publicize my work, what I researched in my thesis, and also to seek new collaborators, to find people who are interested in working on similar problems. I think the event will be quite important in this sense,” he said.

Students Juliana Calderon and Leonardo Garcia from the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing at the State University of Campinas (IMECC/UNICAMP) are at IMPA for the first time to participate in the workshop. “Our advisor, Ethan Cotterill, will be presenting at the workshop. And for me, an event like this at IMPA, on my first time here, helps me explore new horizons I can reach after my doctorate, for example, learning more about areas related to mine,” explained the student.

Leonardo sees primarily the possibilities for academic exchange that can develop through participation in the event. “My research is somewhat related to geometry. So, the event will be important for me to have a little more contact with the area and also with number theory. I'm really enjoying IMPA, it's very beautiful,” he concluded.

The organizing committee also includes researchers Ana María Botero (University of Bielefeld, Germany), Roberto Gualdi (Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain), Suely Lima (IMPA), Marco Pacini (Federal Fluminense University), and Eduardo Vital (University of Bielefeld, Germany).
