Work by Robert Morris wins the Elon Lages Lima Prize 2023
IMPA researcher Robert Morris and researchers Walner Mendonça (PhD from IMPA), Fábio Botler (UFRJ), Maurício Collares (TU Graz – Austria), Taísa Martins (UFF), and Guilherme Oliveira Mota (USP) were the winners of the third edition of the Elon Lages Lima Prize for their work "Combinatória". The book was published in 2021 by IMPA's publishing house and was used in a course at the 33rd Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium.
The Judging Committee's report highlighted the didactic nature of the work. "Despite not neglecting mathematical rigor and presenting content with increasing density, the text flows smoothly. Several chapters include examples and illustrations to facilitate the understanding of the concepts presented, and exercises follow at the end of each one," the evaluation panel emphasized.

"The book emerged as part of a strategy to disseminate Combinatorics in the country, embedded in the idea of launching the 1st Brazilian School of Combinatorics, with the aim of attracting new students to the area, as well as contributing to the training of new researchers," noted the evaluators Carlile Lavor (Unicamp), who chaired the Commission, Elizabeth Wegner Karas (UFPR), João Frederico da Costa Azevedo Meyer (Unicamp), Liliane Maia (UnB) and Ronaldo Garcia (UFG).
The award ceremony will take place during the Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium, promoted by the SBM (Brazilian Mathematical Society) at IMPA, between July 24 and 28 of this year.
The Elon Lages Lima Prize is an honor bestowed by the SBMAC (Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics) in conjunction with the SBM (Brazilian Society of Mathematics). Its objective is to promote and encourage national bibliographic production in mathematics and its applications, dedicated to the training and dissemination of knowledge in the field.
The prize is aimed at works written by Brazilian authors or authors who work professionally in Brazil. They must be dedicated to themes in various areas of Mathematics and Applications, and formats such as monographs, introductory texts, and preferably textbooks are accepted. The submitted work must have been published no more than four years before the year of the award.
