With a virtual edition, the School of Probability begins on the 31st.

The Covid-19 pandemic is causing adaptations in all areas. The 24th edition of the Brazilian School of Probability (EBP), which was to be held in person in São Paulo, has moved to a virtual environment. Starting August 31st, two mini-courses open to the public will be broadcast via Google Meet and the IMPA YouTube channel . The presentations will be in English, and participants who wish to receive certificates can register until the start of the classes. Click here to access the program .

“The online format will allow researchers from more isolated parts of the country to participate. To teach the classes, we will have the winner of the 2014 Fields Medal, Martin Hairer, and Perla Sousi, a renowned mathematician from the University of Cambridge. We believe that her participation can encourage other female researchers in the field,” says Milton Jara (IMPA), one of the event organizers.

Professor Perla Sousi from the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge will teach the course “Random Walks and Uniform Spanning Trees”. She will address the properties of a typical spanning tree and propose discussions on sampling algorithms using random walks presented in the 1990s. Methods for sampling a uniform spanning tree will also be explored. The proposal is to use the connection with random walks and a recent Hutchcroft algorithm to obtain results on the fine geometry of uniform spanning trees.

Martin Hairer, holder of the Chair of Probability and Stochastic Analysis at Imperial College London, will present the mini-course "Brownian Castle". Starting from a review of Wilson's renormalization group in the case of 1+1 dimensional dynamical systems, he will discuss the EW and KPZ fixed points. The lectures will focus on proving some of the trajectory properties of the Brownian Castle, including a new construction of the Brownian web that emerges as the main ingredient in the construction of the Brownian Castle.

In addition to Milton Jara, the 24th edition of the EBP has Dirk Erhard (UFBA), Adriana Neumann (UFRGS), and Christian Olivera (Unicamp) as members of the scientific committee. These four researchers are also part of the organizing committee along with Diego Sebastian Ledesma (Unicamp).

The event has been held annually since 1997 by IMPA, ICMC-USP, IME-USP, IM-UFRJ, IMECC-UNICAMP, UFMG, UFPE, and PUC-RIO, with support from various scientific societies and research agencies. The EBP is considered a traditional international meeting on probability theory and stochastic processes, making significant contributions to strengthening the research area in Brazil and South America.
