Webinars celebrate IMPA Award winners


The winners of the 5th edition of the IMPA Journalism Award will participate in two webinars, on Wednesday (8) and Friday (10), at 11 am, promoted to tell the process of reporting the reports chosen by the jury. The broadcasts will be on IMPA's YouTube channel and will be moderated by IMPA's general director, Marcelo Viana, and the Press Office coordinator, Raphael Gomide, members of the Judging Committee.

The first virtual meeting is scheduled for Wednesday (8), at 11 am, bringing together the top three winners of the “Scientific Dissemination” category. On Friday (10), at the same time, the chat will be with the winners of “Mathematics”.

IMPA promotes event on commutative algebra and geometry.

In the first webinar, journalist Nádia Pontes will present details of the series " The Scientists of the Amazon," broadcast on Deutsche Welle and awarded first place. The documentary, spanning three episodes, explored the work of women researchers who dedicate their professional lives to studying the Amazon rainforest. The series was unanimously chosen by the jury as the winner in its category.

Natália Belizário and Jéssica Maes will discuss the production of the “ Habitat Podcast,” from Folha de S. Paulo , which came in second place in the Science Communication category. The audio and text reports discuss the human impact on the loss of biodiversity on the planet and the possibility of a mass extinction. The work is also authored by Magê Flores and Maurício Meireles.

Christina Queiroz will share behind-the-scenes details of the series “Other Faces of Independence ,” published by Pesquisa Fapesp magazine. The work was carried out in partnership with Glenda Mezarobba, Carlos Fioravanti, Yuri Vasconcelos, Ana Paula Orlandi, Danilo Albergaria, and Diego Viana. The reports show how science was treated as a state policy during the Empire, with economic and diplomatic benefits for Brazil, including the maintenance of its territory. The material also includes an excellent video interview with the director of the Ipiranga Museum.

Mathematics Category

On Friday (8), it is Bruno Romani's turn to talk about the report “How artificial intelligence revealed the secrets of the Beatles”, a partnership with Marcos Muller and William Mariotto. Published in Estadão, the work explains the functioning of AI and its application in “demixing” algorithms that revealed “hidden” conversations of the Beatles. The report won first place in the Mathematics category.

Secondly, journalist Stefhanie Piovezan, from Jornal da USP, will talk about the production process of the report " Basic education students learn mathematics and statistics by making skirts" . The text deals with the use of statistics and geometry topics for making skirts and shows how basic education students learn the subject through creative initiative.

Lucas Duarte Matos, who came in third place, comments on the report " Pedagogical practices have tools in the virtual world for learning mathematics and geometry ," which aired on TV Liberal (an affiliate of TV Globo in Pará). The work is a partnership with Mônica Chagas da Silva and other professionals.
