Webinars bring together winners of the IMPA Journalism Prize.
The winners of the Fridays edition of the IMPA Journalism Prize will participate in two webinars, this Wednesday (29) and Friday (1st), at 2 pm, to tell about the reporting process of the reports chosen by the jury. The broadcasts will be on IMPA's YouTube channel and will be moderated by IMPA's general director, Marcelo Viana, and the Press Office coordinator, Raphael Gomide, members of the Judging Committee.
The first virtual meeting, on the 29th, brings together the top three winners in the “Science Communication” category: Bernardo Esteves (Piauí), Catalina Leite (O Povo) and Isabela Moreira (Revista Galileu). The meeting on Friday (1st) features the winners in the “Mathematics” category: Bruno Vaiano (Superinteressante), Rafael Garcia (O Globo) and Bruno Romani (O Estado de S.Paulo).
Science Communication
In the first webinar, Bernardo Esteves, the first-place winner, will present details of the report "The Return of Ubirajara ," published in Piauí magazine. The work reconstructs step-by-step the story of the return of the holotype of the dinosaur Ubirajara jubatus, which lived in the Chapada do Araripe 110 million years ago. The work recalls that the fossils had been smuggled to Germany and were repatriated after a campaign launched on social media by Brazilian paleontologists. It was the first time that the Germans agreed to return a specimen.
Journalist Catalina Leite, from the newspaper O Povo, will discuss the behind-the-scenes aspects of the " Archaeological Traces Special , " which came in second place in Science Communication. In three episodes, the series explores the scientific, social, economic, and cultural impacts of archaeology in the Serra da Capivara.
Isabela Moreira, who came in third place, will share details about her report " The Woman of the Past ," published in Galileu Magazine. The work, edited by Luiza Monteiro, discusses the representation of women in prehistory.
This year, the institute will pay a total of R $ 36,000 to the winners. First place winners will receive R $ 10,000. Second and third place winners will receive R $ 5,000 and R $ 3,000 respectively.
Mathematics
On Friday (1st) it is Bruno Vaiano's turn to give details about the research process for the report “ Primacy of Primes” , published in Superinteressante. The work, which came in first place in the Mathematics category, explains the concept of prime numbers and their importance, mainly for cryptography. The work also presents Euclid's proofs and the Riemann zeta function, in addition to addressing recent studies on prime numbers such as that of the Chinese Yitang Zhang, who managed to prove that there are infinitely many pairs of primes that are at most 70 million numbers apart from each other.
Secondly, journalist Rafael Garcia discusses the article "Rio de Janeiro group makes progress on a problem that has challenged mathematicians for over 90 years ," from the newspaper O Globo. The text, produced with an infographic, shows the work of IMPA researchers and collaborators on advances in the upper bound for Ramsey's Theorem.
Bruno Romani, who came in third place, comments on the article “Words become numbers: understand how ChatGPT's artificial intelligence works” . The work is a partnership with Marcos Muller and was published in Estado de S.Paulo. The article used devices such as GIFs to explain how Artificial Intelligence works and how to feed it. The work explains that the system uses probabilistic analysis models to understand the relationship between words and select the terms that best meet users' demands. The authors had already been awarded at the Thursdays edition of the IMPA Journalism Prize in 2022.
The public can participate in the webinar by sending questions. After the online broadcasts, the videos will be available on IMPA's YouTube channel . See you there!
