Visgraf presents a new phase of the 'The Tempest' experiment.

Produção reúne diversas linguagens para contar peça escrita há cerca de 400 anos

One experiment, three ways to experience it. Beyond the groundbreaking nature of the production process, which combines virtual reality, cinema, theater, and gaming technology, "The Tempest," a play by William Shakespeare written approximately 400 years ago, will be shown on Tuesday the 2Mondays, at 7 pm, at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), in an equally innovative way, in a version created by Visgraf, the institution's Computer Graphics laboratory.

In the Visgraf production, which has been investigating mathematical and computational models for application in new media since 1989, actors, using virtual reality and motion capture equipment, perform in virtual and three-dimensional scenarios. The performances are mapped in graphic animations and projected live onto a cinema screen, controlled in real time by director Manoel Prazeres, who chooses camera angles and framing.

In this new phase, the director will select the cameras according to a probabilistic logic. The result of the editing will be displayed simultaneously in three presentation modes: audiovisual, 360º Cinematic VR, and Immersive VR.

In the audiovisual experience, considered non-immersive from the audience's point of view, in addition to the projection screen and the seating area, there is the backstage area – where the actors perform immersed in a virtual reality environment – and the director's area, in which he controls the media projected to the audience in real time.

In the virtual reality experience, "The Tempest" will be presented in 360º cinematic VR, in which the audience uses a basic VR headset to view the scenes from a fixed point with 360º rotation; and immersive VR, a fully immersive and interactive format, made possible by state-of-the-art equipment with position and rotation tracking, used by the audience.

Since December of last year, Visgraf, coordinated by Luiz Velho, Senior Researcher at IMPA, has promoted three screenings of "The Tempest." The first two were aimed at professionals in the fields of film, theater, and computer graphics, with discussions following the screening. Later, the original format of the production was modified and shown to an even wider audience as a 360º cinematic experience at the Rio Creative Conference (Rio2C) in April.

Due to the auditorium's limited capacity, we kindly request that you confirm your attendance by email in advance.
