The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics held the Live Coding Music Conference between February Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The event brought together students and researchers from various universities in Rio and addressed topics that use mathematics and computer science in innovative ways to make music.

Live-coding is a novelty in Brazil, but it is a subject of study in several universities around the world for the production of video and electronic music through a series of programming languages, with the goal of transforming the computer into a musical instrument.

In an interview with Arte Clube, Luiz Velho, coordinator of Visgraf, the Computer Graphics Laboratory at IMPA, defends the importance of bringing an event with this theme to Brazil. “Everything is mediated by an intelligence that we program,” he explains. “We are very much in tune with this, but it’s necessary to go little by little until we reach the application. In this area, soon we will have another type of music, combined with a series of things like mathematics and artificial intelligence. This event is a step in that direction,” says the coordinator.
