To update basic education mathematics teachers with new approaches and content, to present different teaching perspectives and to reinvigorate the creativity of professionals in the area. In virtual format, the January edition of the Professional Development Program for High School Mathematics Teachers (PAPMEM) , which ended this Friday (29), successfully fulfilled its objectives. During the week, the course hadeight classes that were broadcast on IMPA's YouTube channel , and reached more than 30 thousand views.

Camila Diles, a mathematics graduate from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), believes the program sparks a passion for teaching the subject. “The course is of a high level and has incredible support, having been organized by IMPA for so many years. Besides updating my knowledge, learning, and sharing, I feel alive and happy to be able to study. The classes give me many ideas for preparing my lessons for my students in Peru and on my social media.”

A veteran of PAPMEM, which she has participated in four times, this woman from Pernambuco has lived in Peru since 2017, and took advantage of the virtual edition of the program to return to the course. Although she misses sharing ideas with her peers, she appreciates the flexibility that the online format provides. "I can pause the classes, go back and listen to something I didn't understand, watch the class at a time that doesn't interfere with my work schedule, and I can be anywhere in the world."

The program coordinator, Eduardo Wagner, who holds a master's degree in Mathematics from IMPA and is a professor at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), explains how the training week represents a valuable opportunity for professional development for high school teachers. “The world is changing rapidly, and in education, we cannot remain static. Due to the immobility of traditional teacher training courses, PAPMEM is a rich channel for providing new developments, new content, the use of technology in teaching, and new approaches determined by the current National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC).”

O professor Lucas Pereira participou pela primeira vez do programa.

Among the classes he attended, Professor Lucas Pereira, a graduate of the Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais (IFNMG), gives special emphasis to the one on "Combinatorics (Different Techniques)," by Professor Cícero Thiago, and to the one by Carlos Nehab, on "Multiplicative Thinking and the BNCC (National Common Core Curriculum)." "As educators, we have an obligation to seek and propose an ever-improving education. I believe that working while observing the BNCC is to understand the importance of creating a better education."

In his first course, he believes the classes gave him a new perspective on mathematics teaching methods. “The program offers the updating that we teachers so desperately need, seeking to present contextualizations that are necessary for our students to understand and see meaning in mathematics. The exercise lists add a lot, forcing us to think in a non-monotonous way, which is important to avoid in our classes,” says the professor, who is already looking forward to the next edition of the program.
