IMPA researcher Vinicius Ramos will give a lecture this Thursday (2) on the work of Romanian mathematician Ciprian Manolescu, from the University of California. Manolescu was recently awarded the EH Moore Research Article Prize 2019, from the American Mathematical Society (AMS), for solving the triangulation conjecture.

Maurício Peixoto, founder of IMPA, dies at age 98.
The mathematician dedicated himself to rural schools in Petrópolis for decades.

Awarded every three years, the Moore Prize is given to the best research paper published in the AMS journals: “Journal of the AMS”, “Proceedings of the AMS”, “Transactions of the AMS”, “Memoirs of the AMS”, “Mathematics of Computation”, “Electronic Journal of Conformal Geometry and Dynamics”, and “Electronic Journal of Representation Theory”.

In the article “Pin(2)-equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer homology and the triangulation conjecture”, published in the “Journal of the American Mathematical Society”, Manolescu managed to construct topological varieties in dimensions greater than four that cannot be triangulated using gauge theory and Floer homology.

In the lecture, which will take place at 4 pm in auditorium 1 of IMPA, Ramos will address the context of the result and explain the techniques used by Manolescu to prove the theorem.
