Videos highlight moments from the 23rd Olympic Week.

In a relaxed atmosphere and stunning scenery, the 23rd Olympic Week brought together medalists from the 41st Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM) and the 1st edition of the Girls in Mathematics Tournament (TM²) in Natal (RN), between January 26 and February 1, 2020. In addition to participating in the award ceremonies of their respective competitions, the young people were able to socialize with colleagues and teachers and participate in classes, study sessions, lectures, mock exams, and mathematics tests. With testimonials from medalists and coordinators, videos highlight the best moments of the event organized by IMPA and the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM).

“For me, Olympic week is a space where I can be myself. When I'm here, I don't feel the time passing. It's not just about mathematics, it's about the community you're part of, the friends you make, what you learn, the experiences you share,” reported medalist Jamile Rebouças, from Pecajus (CE).

During Olympic Week, training sessions are held with students who will be chosen to represent Brazil in international mathematics competitions. Carlos Gustavo Moreira , known as Gugu, general coordinator of the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM) and researcher at IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics), highlighted the promising future often reserved for these students. “Many young mathematicians of international renown are former Olympians. The Olympiad has already helped discover more than one generation of scientists.”

Being part of the teams in international competitions was one of the reasons that inspired Pedro Gomes Cabral, from Recife (PE), to delve deeply into mathematics. “I remember when I started participating in Olympiads, I saw the older students, those who won gold at level 3 and went on to international competitions, and I thought, 'Wow, I hope they study hard so that one day I can be in that position.'” A wish that came true. The student won a gold medal in the historic 61st edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which propelled Brazil into the Top 10 of the competition.

The 23rd Olympic Week was supported by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development – CNPq and the National Institute of Science and Technology of Mathematics – INCTMat, and sponsored by the fintech company Stone Co. In addition to sponsorship, the company also facilitated the participation of Professor Razvan Gelca from Texas Tech University as a speaker at the 23rd Olympic Week, and brought some of its leaders for lectures and interactions with the medalists.
