The Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, met this Friday (9) and this Saturday (10) with teachers from the Mathematics on the Network Program – an initiative of the government of the state of Espírito Santo, which offers students classes to improve their knowledge in the subject through Scientific Initiation and Mathematics Monitoring projects.
The meeting took place at Sesc Praia Formosa, in Aracruz, and aimed to discuss initiatives for scientific initiation, guidelines for the development of school teaching materials, and other topics. In a lecture at the event, Viana addressed the importance of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for the market and the career path possibilities for students with good performance in Mathematics.
“I had the opportunity to present the IMPA Tech proposal to teachers in the Espírito Santo school system. I consider this connection between higher education and basic education to be very important,” stated the Director-General of IMPA.
Viana also participated in discussions about the obstacles the country faces in mathematics education. "In my view, the issue of teacher training and professional development is the critical aspect, the real crux of the matter," he said.
According to the State Department of Education (SEDU), the meeting brought together more than 150 mathematics teachers. "This event addresses one of the great challenges of education in Brazil, which is improving the teaching and learning processes of this subject so important to our students: Mathematics. It was a great opportunity to discuss relevant topics for improving pedagogical practices," stated Aleide Cristina de Camargo, Curriculum Manager for Basic Education at SEDU.
The Scientific Initiation project of the Mathematics in the Network Program is aimed at improving basic mathematics and enhancing techniques for reading and writing results. The Mathematics Tutoring program allows for the identification of young teaching talents and offers tutoring support in regular classes at public schools in Espírito Santo.
