Viana meets with the Minister of Education and the Mayor of Rio.

IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, met this Monday (24), in Rio de Janeiro, with the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, and with the city's mayor, Eduardo Paes. At the meeting, Viana presented IMPA Tech, the institute's undergraduate project.

The four-year course in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation will have four areas of emphasis: Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, and Physics. The proposal includes a two-year basic cycle.

One of the course's distinguishing features is the selection process, which will give weight to students' performance in the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) and other knowledge olympiads. The largest scientific competition in the country, the OBMEP brings together 18 million students from all over Brazil every year.

During his visit to the city, Minister Camilo Santana learned about the Rio de Janeiro City Hall's project to revitalize the Port Zone. The area will eventually house the IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) undergraduate program. Also participating in the meeting were the Secretary of Higher Education, Denise Pires de Carvalho, and the municipal secretaries Chicão Bulhões, of Economic Development, Innovation and Simplification of Rio de Janeiro, Renan Ferreirinha, of Education, and Tatiana Roque, of Science and Technology.
