The newspaper Valor Econômico covered the main points discussed in the live broadcast about Brazilian mathematics olympiads in articles published on Friday (11) and Monday (14). The “Live do Valor” was broadcast on the newspaper’s YouTube channel and featured the participation of the deputy director of IMPA and general coordinator of OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools), Claudio Landim, and the IMPA researcher and general coordinator of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM) Carlos Gustavo Moreira (Gugu). The debate was moderated by Valor’s digital coordinator in Rio, Rafael Rosas.
One of the articles highlights Gugu's speech, pointing out that OBMEP aims to discover and encourage talent for scientific research from an early age and to make the teaching of mathematics "more creative and interesting." Claudio Landim spoke of the "impressive logistics scheme" of the Olympiad, which costs less than R$ 3 per student .
With a budget of approximately R$ 35 million per year, the competition reaches 20 million students from public schools per edition. This number is more than triple the number of participants in the National High School Exam (Enem).

Landim: 'It's not enough to identify young talents, but to train them'

The newspaper highlighted the concern of the OBM's general coordinator regarding the low participation of girls in the competition . “This worries us a lot; it’s a phenomenon we’d like to understand better… It’s a global concern, within the international mathematics community. It’s much smaller than it should be,” she stated. To mitigate the situation, measures such as the creation of the Girls in Mathematics Tournament, aimed at female students from the 8th grade to the final year of high school, seek to encourage female participation in competitions.
Furthermore, the newspaper highlighted that IMPA is studying ways to admit homeschooled students to OBMEP in the future . According to Landim, one possibility is that students who have undergone homeschooling and wish to register would be affiliated with a school to participate in the event, since educational institutions are currently responsible for administering and sending the tests.
