Among the medalists interviewed for the story is 18-year-old João Vitor, who went on stage at the ceremony to receive his fifth gold medal. "It's an inspiration for the friends who will come after me and for the younger students I already teach," said the student who, due to his performance, received a scholarship to attend high school.
Record TV highlighted the awarding of the honor to the multi-medalists by President Lula. "This is the most important lesson: you have to sacrifice something to achieve something," José Guedes told reporter Pedro Paulo Spoletto. The report also noted that the awardees are eligible to apply for undergraduate places at IMPA Tech.
The award was also highlighted in the newspaper O Globo, which emphasized President Lula's speech upon receiving the honorary medal from the Olympics. "I am the Brazilian who has received the most honorary doctorates without having a higher education degree. I think this gold medal means much more than many of the awards I have received," commented the head of state.
The newspaper also highlighted the presence of the Rio Grande do Sul delegation at the event and the OBMEP's logistics in making the trip possible. "Among the medalists present, about 60 were students from Rio Grande do Sul, who were directly or indirectly affected by the rains in the state. OBMEP, responsible for the students' transportation logistics, changed airline tickets and adjusted strategies to meet the medalists' needs," wrote reporter Pâmela Dias.
The OBMEP National Award Ceremony awarded 650 students from all over Brazil with the gold medal of the 18th edition, held in 2023, on Tuesday (11). In addition to President Lula, the event was attended by the First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva, Ministers Camilo Santana (Education) and Luciana Santos (Science, Technology and Innovation), the Mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, and the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.
