The program offers postgraduate scholarships to medalists.

A partnership between IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) and CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) will offer master's and doctoral scholarships to medalists of the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) . There will be five master's scholarships worth R $ 2,100.00 each, lasting 24 months, and ten doctoral scholarships worth R$3,100.00 each, lasting 48 months. Applications are open until August 11th on the PICME-CAPES portal .

To participate in the Scientific Initiation and Master's Program (PICME-Capes), candidates must be enrolled in postgraduate courses in Mathematics at institutions accredited by Capes. “OBMEP and Capes are resuming a successful program that was discontinued in 2020. In PICME, OBMEP and OBM medalists can apply for a master's scholarship in mathematics, thus deepening their training in this area of knowledge, with all the resulting benefits,” stated the deputy director of IMPA and general coordinator of OBMEP, Claudio Landim.

According to the notice, released this Monday (31), only regular students of postgraduate courses who have not yet been awarded other scholarships can apply. Those who are in undergraduate studies concurrently with postgraduate studies are also eligible to participate in the selection process. Check the notice .

Selection process

The selection and evaluation of candidates will be carried out by an evaluation committee appointed by the IMPA management and the PICME-OBMEP coordination. The results of the scholarship selection process will be announced on August 30th.

The continuation of the scholarship will be subject to a semesterly review of the scholarship recipient's academic performance in the affiliated Graduate Program by the PICME-OBMEP Coordination. At the end of each semester, the scholarship recipient must submit an academic report detailing the activities carried out during the period and the progress of the submitted Work Plan.

About PICME

The Scientific Initiation and Master's Program aims to offer university students, medalists in the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBMEP) or the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM), the opportunity to pursue advanced studies in Mathematics simultaneously with their undergraduate studies. Participants receive scholarships through a partnership with CNPq (Scientific Initiation) and CAPES (Master's and Doctorate). PICME is coordinated nationally by IMPA and offered by Postgraduate Programs in Mathematics at various universities throughout the country.

About OBMEP

The OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) brings together more than 18 million students from all over the country every year. Aimed at students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school, the Olympiad helps to stimulate the study of mathematics and identify young talents in the discipline.

Created in 2005 by IMPA and held with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).

Other objectives of the initiative are to promote social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge and to contribute to improving the quality of basic education, enabling a greater number of Brazilian students to access quality educational materials.
