The 19th OBMEP 2024 was the subject of 750 articles published in the Brazilian press between February and March – the period for registration in the scientific olympiad. O Globo , Extra, Folha de S.Paulo , Agência Brasil , the portals UOL , Terra , Metrópoles , and the radio stations Globo, Tupi , and Nacional were some of the major media outlets that reported on the competition.

In Folha de S.Paulo , OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools) gained space in Folhinha, a section of the newspaper dedicated to news about the children's world. The publication publishes weekly logic puzzles from the OBMEP Portal, in partnership with IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics). This initiative has been running since last year.

The newspaper interviewed the general coordinator of OBMEP and researcher at IMPA, Claudio Landim, who emphasized that the test explores the logical reasoning of the students.

"The OBMEP exam does not measure mathematical knowledge. The problems are designed to be solved using only creativity, imagination, and reasoning, making it more of a fun mathematical exercise with puzzles than a traditional exam."

The newspaper Extra mentioned that OBMEP is one of the most important competitions in the academic field and highlighted the participation of more than 400 students from Faetec in the scientific competition. The newspaper interviewed Samara Martins, a student from the Foundation for Support of Technical Schools, who had already received an honorable mention in the previous edition of the Olympiad.

“Participating in OBMEP last year was incredible. The tests were very demanding and creative. I'm apprehensive about this year's edition because I'll be competing at a more advanced level. This will require even more knowledge and concentration from me. Still, I'm confident and believe I'll do well,” the student told the newspaper.

The newspaper O Globo emphasized the importance of the Olympiad for students through a statement by the director-general of IMPA, Marcelo Viana. “Today, more and more, we see the results in knowledge olympiads being used as a parameter of academic performance, for example in admissions to undergraduate courses, such as IMPA Tech. It is yet another victory for the spirit that presided over the creation of the OBMEP by IMPA almost two decades ago.”

For the Agência Brasil article, Viana addressed, in addition to the importance of OBMEP, the significant number of students enrolled in each edition. “Over all these years, the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools has been growing and consolidating itself. And it continues to break participation records with each edition. It is a great satisfaction to see how the results of OBMEP are increasingly being used as selection parameters for access to universities.”

This year, the first and second phases of OBMEP will take place on June 4th and October 19th, respectively.
