The Lua programming language turns 30 years old.

The Lua Programming Language turns 30 and to celebrate the date, a workshop will be held next Tuesday (17), at the RDC Auditorium, at PUC-Rio, starting at 1:30 pm. This year, the program includes seven lectures given in Portuguese and one in English. Check out the full program here. No prior registration is required to participate. However, space is subject to capacity.

Researchers Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo, from IMPA, and Roberto Ierusalimschy and Waldemar Celes, from PUC-Rio, created Lua in 1993. At the time, they were part of the Computer Graphics Technology Group (Tecgraf) at PUC-Rio. The researchers' project aimed to develop graphical interfaces for a company's programs.

Scripting languages are used in industrial applications, with an emphasis on embedded systems and games, such as the video games World of Warcraft and Angry Birds.

"It's a huge source of pride to have developed and continue to participate in this project because it generates a huge international impact, and enormous companies use Lua. It's excellent to know that something of this quality is made in Brazil and can be exported and used abroad," said the IMPA researcher.

The guest speakers for the lectures are: Marcelo Gattass, Vice President of Development and Innovation Affairs at PUC-Rio; Thais Batista, President of the Brazilian Computer Society and professor in the Department of Informatics and Applied Mathematics at UFRN; Gilberto Câmara, Senior Researcher at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE); Anna Hester, Vice President of Product and Engineering for Windows + Devices at Microsoft; André Clinio and André Costa, from Tecgraf's distributed systems team and one of the first to work with Lua in products; Lourival Vieira Neto, co-founder of Ring-0 Network and author of Lunatik; and software developer Marc Balmer.
