The Jacob Palis Prize encourages scientific partnership between Brazil and the USA.

Applications are open until August 3rd for the Jacob Palis Award for Affiliate Members of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), an initiative of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in partnership with the Fulbright Commission. The program encourages collaboration between young researchers from Brazil and the United States through short-term exchanges, joint research, and the formation of scientific networks in the areas of science and technology.

Exclusively for active affiliated members of the ABC (Brazilian Academy of Sciences), the award honors mathematician Jacob Palis — former president of the ABC, former director-general and emeritus researcher at IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics), and the first Brazilian to receive the prestigious Balzan Prize. In 1964, Palis was a Fulbright scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, and became an international authority in the field of dynamical systems.

According to the call for proposals, up to ten projects will be selected, with funding of up to US$70,000 (approximately R$380,000) per proposal over two years. The funds will cover travel, per diem, health insurance, and expenses directly related to the research. Interested parties must submit proposals in English by August 3rd to abc@fulbright.org.br. Activities will begin on October 1st.

Each proposal must be made in partnership with US researchers affiliated with US educational or research institutions, and include at least one visit lasting between 14 and 28 days.

The call for applications highlights scientific quality, innovation, potential for long-term collaboration, and efficient use of resources as selection criteria. Among the program's benefits are access to research environments in Brazil and the USA, mentoring and networking opportunities, participation in program events, and broad dissemination through the Fulbright, ABC, and partner institutions' networks.
