The first OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools) for 4th and 5th grade students will bring together 1.5 million students.
One and a half million fourth and fifth grade students from 20,000 public schools across Brazil will face an unprecedented challenge today: the 1st Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools – Level A (OBMEP Level A 2018).
Proposed by IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics), which has been promoting the competition since 2005 for students from Fridays grade to high school, the 1st OBMEP Level A has the support of SBM (Brazilian Mathematical Society), the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).

To participate in the Olympiad, approximately 1,500 education departments and representatives from federal schools registered for free between September 11 and October 10.
The test, consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions, was developed by IMPA and will be administered in participating schools. Students will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete it.
The organizational model – in which IMPA is responsible for the academic aspects, and the secretariats for the logistics of administering and grading exams and for any awards – was successfully tested in August by the municipality of Nova Iguaçu (RJ).
The content of the tests follows the National Curriculum Parameters for Wednesdays and Thursdays grade elementary school students. The questions emphasize logical reasoning and creativity. The OBMEP aims to stimulate the study of Mathematics, contribute to improving the quality of Basic Education, identify young talents, and promote social inclusion.
