The Elon Lages Lima Award is now open for entries.
The Elon Lages Lima Prize is open for entries until April 11th. Promoted by the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM) and the Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC), the 4th edition of the prize is intended for Brazilian authors or professionals working in the country who have published works in the areas of Mathematics and Applications, such as monographs, introductory texts, and preferably textbooks. Those interested in the award must complete the application form available at this link on the SBM website. Submitted works will be evaluated by a judging committee that will consider criteria such as originality, relevance and depth; clarity and quality of exposition; and national or international circulation. Entries may be submitted by the authors themselves or by authorized third parties, using the form available on the SBM and SBMAC websites. The winner will receive a diploma certified by the organizations and a prize of R$ 10,000. The results will be announced on July 1st. The award ceremony will take place at the 44th National Congress of Applied and Computational Mathematics (CNMAC), which will be held between September 15th and 19th at the School of Applied Mathematics of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV EMAp), in Rio de Janeiro. For the president of the judging committee of the award, Carlile Lavor, this year's edition should be marked by an even more intense competition of works from various segments. “We expect an increase in interest in Mathematics and its Applications, mainly due to the revolution we are experiencing with Artificial Intelligence. With each edition, we notice that the level of competition is becoming increasingly higher. The diversity of topics within the area is very large, which makes the work of the committee difficult,” assesses the professor from the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing of the State University of Campinas (IMECC – Unicamp), member of the Board of Directors of the SBM and researcher at the Center for Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry (CeMEAI). Elon Lages Lima Award The award is a tribute to the former director and emeritus researcher of IMPA, Elon Lages Lima, who dedicated himself to the creation of mathematical literature in Portuguese. Elon Lages Lima passed away in 2017 at the age of 87, but continues to inspire an entire generation of scientists and professionals in the field in Brazil. To this day, Elon is the researcher with the most published mathematics books at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Portuguese. In total, the Alagoas native has 40 registered titles, which motivated SBMAC and SBM to launch the award in his honor in 2019 to stimulate national bibliographic production aimed at disseminating knowledge in the field.
