The deadline to register for OBMEP 2018 ends today.
Created to stimulate the study of Mathematics in Brazil, identify talented young people, and promote social inclusion through knowledge, the OBMEP ( Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) has transformed lives. Inspiring stories like that of the triplets Fábia, Fabiele, and Fabíola Loterio, from Santa Leopoldina, a rural municipality in Espírito Santo, emerge in every state of the country.

OBMEP helps change the lives of young students.
The girls' talent was discovered by OBMEP in 2014, when they were 13 years old. Since then, even without internet access and often studying with borrowed books, the sisters have won 14 medals (five gold, four silver, and five bronze). Today, all three are pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) and receive financial aid from OBMEP-TIM scholarships.
For new stories like this to emerge, municipal, state, federal and private schools, with classes from Elementary School (6th to 9th grade) and High School, have until this Monday (2) to register for the 14th edition of OBMEP, held by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). Last year, the competition brought together 18.2 million students from 99.6% of Brazilian municipalities.
Registration must be done by the schools using the form available exclusively on the OBMEP website.
The tests will be administered on June 5th (1st phase) and September 15th (2nd phase). The announcement of the winners is scheduled for November 21st. Those awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals will be guaranteed entry into scientific initiation programs.
About OBMEP
Created in 2005 and organized by IMPA with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), OBMEP is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
The effective impact of OBMEP on mathematics results in the country has been measured by independent studies. According to work by former INEP president Chico Soares, schools that actively participate in the competition show an improvement in student performance of 26 points on the Prova Brasil exam, equivalent to 1.5 years of extra schooling.
Mathematics Biennium
OBMEP is part of the activities of the 2017-2018 Brazilian Mathematics Biennium. Throughout this year, a series of national and international actions will be carried out that seek, among other objectives, to encourage the study of the discipline, popularize it, and promote activities that contribute to bringing the public closer to mathematics. Among these is the most important meeting in the field, the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), in August, in Rio de Janeiro.
