The Brazilian School of Probability brings together more than 130 participants.
The 28th edition of the Brazilian School of Probability (EBP) ends this Friday (8) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Held for the first time in 1997, at IMPA, the event is traditional in the areas of probability theory and stochastic processes.
The Brazilian probability community initiative promotes interaction between researchers and students from Brazil and abroad to shape the directions and interests of Brazilian probabilists, which has been contributing to the growth of the area in the country. Over the years, the EBP has also received greater international participation, as well as support from funding agencies and the main academic institutions in Brazil. Milton Jara, researcher at IMPA and professor at IMPA Tech, chaired the plenary session this Wednesday (5).
“The School’s focus is to introduce Brazilian graduate students to the main advances in current probability research. I have participated in the School since 2003, as a doctoral student, and have been an organizer on several occasions. This time, I am participating for the first time as a plenary speaker, which is certainly a great source of pride, especially considering everything I have learned during more than 20 years participating in the School,” said Jara.
The IMPA researcher is joined by seven other plenary members: Adrián González-Casanova (University of Arizona); Alexander Drewitz (University of Cologne, Germany); Avelio Sepúlveda (University of Chile); Eleanor Archer (Paris Dauphine University); Natalia Cardona-Tobón (National University of Colombia – Bogotá); Taísa Lopes Martins (Federal Fluminense University – UFF); and Vittoria Silvestri (Sapienza University of Rome).
In addition to the plenary sessions, the program includes two mini-courses. Antonio Auffinger (Northwestern University) will speak about "Mathematical foundations of spin glass theory," and Tom Hutchcroft (California Institute of Technology) will discuss "Dimension dependence of critical phenomena in percolation."
“The School pays very special attention to mini-courses, which are taught by world-renowned researchers and complemented by lectures, usually given by researchers from all over the world. Researchers such as SRS Varadhan, winner of the Abel Prize, and Hugo Duminil-Copin, Martin Hairer, Stanislav Smirnov, and Wendelin Werner, winners of the Fields Medal, have already been part of the School,” explained Jara.
The event also features 68 poster presentations and five short talks — given by Daniel de la Riva Massaad (UBC); Jhon Kevin Astoquillca Aguilar (IME-USP); João Maia (Peking University); Melissa González García (Paris-Dauphine); and Sebastian Angel Zaninovich (UBA).
The EBP is a partnership between IMPA, ICMC-USP, IME-USP, IM-UFRJ, IMECC-UNICAMP, UFMG, UFPE, PUC-RIO and UFBA. The organizing committee is composed of Cláudio Landim (IMPA), Marcelo R. Hilário (UFMG), Renato S. dos Santos (UFMG), Leonardo Rolla (IME/USP), Suely Lima (IMPA).
