The Brazilian Academy of Sciences celebrates the legacy of Jacob Palis.

The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) will hold a meeting this Friday (5), at 10 am, in honor of IMPA researcher Jacob Palis (1940–2025), whose career profoundly marked Brazilian and international mathematics and science. The event will be held at ABC headquarters, with open entry to the public and live broadcast on the institution's YouTube channel.

Recognized worldwide for his pioneering contributions to the theory of Dynamical Systems, Palis played a decisive role in the training of generations of researchers and received prestigious distinctions, such as the Balzan Prize and the Grand Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit.

As a scientific leader, he left a lasting legacy in institutions such as IMPA (director-general between 1993 and 2003), and those he presided over: ABC (2007 to 2016), International Mathematical Union (IMU, from 1999 to 2002), World Academy of Sciences (TWAS, between 2007 and 2012) and Brazilian Mathematical Society (from 1979 to 1981).

The gathering will bring together colleagues, friends, former ministers, former rectors, academics, and personalities who knew Palis to celebrate his life, strategic vision, and impact on science.
