The 9th IMPA Journalism Award Receives 150 Entries
The 9th IMPA Journalism Award received 150 submissions of news stories and journalistic series published in newspapers, magazines, on television, on the radio, in podcasts, and on digital platforms. The awards recognize works that help broaden the public’s access to topics related to mathematics, science, and technology through quality journalism.
In this edition, the contest received entries from journalists in 18 states, in addition to the Federal District, underscoring the initiative’s national reach. Among the media outlets represented are TV Globo, Folha de S.Paulo, Superinteressante, O Globo, TV Brasil, Porvir, G1, Galileu, R7, Agência Brasil, G1, Agência FAPESP, Metrópoles, as well as several other national and regional media outlets.
The award covers the categories of Mathematics and Science Communication and will distribute R$36,000 among the six winning entries. In each category, the first-place winner will receive R$10,000; the second-place winner, R$5,000; and the third-place winner, R$3,000.
Created by IMPA, the award aims to encourage the production of reports on mathematics, science, and technology and to recognize outstanding work that brings these topics closer to the public. Submitted entries will be evaluated based on criteria such as journalistic relevance, originality, depth of research, clarity, and quality of execution.
The award recognized articles published between June 25, 2025, and June 19, 2026, in print, digital, television, radio, or podcast formats. Registrations took place between May 18 and June 26. With this latest edition of the contest, the IMPA Award has surpassed the milestone of 1,350 entries in its nine-year history.
The awards ceremony for the 9th IMPA Journalism Award will be held at the National Mathematics Festival, in Rio de Janeiro. The free event, open to the general public, will take place August 27–30 at Axia Marina da Glória. The program will feature lectures, roundtable discussions, and cultural activities that bring together science, technology, and creativity.
