The 8th IMPA Journalism Prize is accepting entries until June 24th.

The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) opened registrations this Tuesday (20) for the 8th IMPA Journalism Prize . The competition will distribute a total of R$ 36,000 to the top three winners in each category: Mathematics and Scientific Dissemination. Registrations are open until June 24. Held since 2018, the award aims to encourage the publication of journalistic reports on Mathematics, Science and Technology in Brazil and to recognize outstanding work that brings these topics closer to society. Journalists with work published or broadcast between June 24, 2024 and June 24, 2025, in any media outlet – newspaper, magazine, portal, blog, television, radio or other – may participate in this edition.

Each journalist may submit a maximum of three reports in each category; in the case of series, up to three episodes are accepted. The main judging criteria are: journalistic relevance of the topic, originality, depth, clarity, and quality of execution of the report.Access the regulations here.

The "Mathematics" category encompasses reports on academic advancements in the field, mathematics education, and mathematics-based technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer graphics, and others. The "Science Communication" category is dedicated to reports from all scientific areas, as well as the challenges faced by science.

R$ 36,000 in prizes for the six winners.

The IMPA Journalism Prize will distribute a total of R$ 36,000 to the winners. The prizes are identical in both categories: R$ 10,000 for 1st place, R$ 5,000 for 2nd place, and R$ 3,000 for 3rd place. Honorable mentions will also be awarded in each category.

The awards ceremony will take place on September 20th at the FestMat Conversations and Connections” event in Rio de Janeiro. Aimed at a general audience, the event is part of IMPA's initiatives to disseminate mathematics and will have the theme “Mathematics and Innovation”. The program will include lectures, roundtables, and cultural activities.

In seven editions of the Award, more than 900 journalistic works were submitted from the country's leading media outlets. In 2024, first place in the "Mathematics" category went to the report "In search of true randomness," by journalist Leonardo Caparroz, published in Superinteressante.

In the Science Communication category, the Fantástico report "Clinical studies with Car-T cells bring hope to Brazilian cancer patients" was chosen as the best publication in the Science Communication category. The report was produced by journalists Mônica Reolom, Ana Carolina Raimundi and their team.
