The 35th Brazilian Congress of Mathematics (CBM) brings together leading figures to discuss scientific advancements.
IMPA will hold the 35th edition of the Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium (CBM) from July 28th to August 1st , the largest and most comprehensive scientific meeting in the field in the country. The event brings together Brazilian and internationally renowned researchers to discuss advances in mathematical research in areas such as Dynamical Systems, Algebraic Geometry, and Partial Differential Equations. Topics such as the importance of mathematics for the productive sector, mathematics olympiads, virtual reality games, and the use of multimodal artificial intelligence will also be featured in the program. This year's edition will also be marked by a special tribute to Jacob Palis – one of the greatest figures in Brazilian mathematics, who passed away in May.
The 35th Brazilian Mathematical Congress (CBM) will feature five international plenary speakers: Svetlana Jitomirskaya , a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley , who worked alongside Artur Avila, an extraordinary researcher at IMPA and winner of the Fields Medal in 2014. Together, they solved the famous "ten martini problem"; Gigliola Staffilani , from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a member of the research group known as "I-team," focused on studies of dispersive nonlinear partial differential equations, which includes mathematicians such as Terence Tao – a Fields Medalist in 2006; José Seade , from the National University of Mexico, who will discuss the geometry and dynamics of discrete subgroups of the automorphism group of the projective plane; Jelani Nelson , from the University of California, Berkeley, who stands out for his research in algorithms for massive datasets; and Marco Gualtieri , from the University of Toronto, a leading figure in differential geometry with fundamental work. in generalized complex geometry . "With each edition, the Colloquium consolidates its tradition as the event that brings together and focuses the Brazilian mathematical community in all its dimensions, including the international aspect," says the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.
Roundtable discussion: "The Value of Mathematics Outside Academia"
Another highlight of the program is the roundtable discussion “The Value of Mathematics Outside Academia: Discussion on the Presence of Mathematicians in Companies and the Academia-Industry Interaction,” which will debate the role of mathematicians in companies and the cooperation between universities and the productive sector. Participants in the debate include João Carabetta , Director of Technology for the City of Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo Nonato (USP-São Carlos), Pedro Peixoto (USP), and Marcelo Viana , Director-General of IMPA.
The event will also feature a series of thematic sessions. Among them are 14 presentations in the area of Visual Computing, coordinated by Visgraf (IMPA's Computer Graphics Laboratory), focusing on computer vision, computer graphics, and artificial intelligence. Guests include André Araújo from Google DeepMind, who will discuss topics related to the use of Gemini and ChatGPT, such as the use of multimodal artificial intelligence, and Steban Clua, a researcher at UFF, who will present the main strategies for improving the rendering of mixed and virtual reality games. Leo Ribeiro, a researcher at the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at USP, will address the use of AI in combating child sexual abuse. The project develops solutions for the automatic detection of materials with this type of content. See here for other participants.
Held annually since 1957, the Brazilian Mathematical Congress (CBM) brings together researchers, professors, and undergraduate and graduate students from across the country and abroad. In total, the 35th CBM will offer five international plenary lectures; three outreach lectures; six advanced courses; five introductory courses; and 21 thematic sessions focusing on areas such as Linear Algebra, Combinatorics, PDEs, Dynamical Systems, Biomathematics, Holomorphic Foliations, and Computer Graphics.
“The Colloquium is a unique space for exchanging ideas and strengthening mathematical research in Brazil. With each edition, we bring together the most innovative and inspiring ideas in the field,” says Jorge Vitório Pereira, scientific coordinator of the event and deputy director of IMPA.
The 35th Brazilian Military Congress will be in honor of Jacob Palis.
This year's edition will also be marked by a special tribute to Jacob Palis, emeritus researcher at IMPA and one of the greatest names in Brazilian mathematics, who passed away in May at the age of 85. An international reference in Dynamical Systems, Palis was director-general of IMPA, president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), member of ten National Academies of Sciences and Doctor Honoris Causa of nine universities in Brazil.
As part of the tribute, Viana will give a lecture on July 30th, recalling the mathematician's importance to science. On the same day, Artur Avila, 2014 Fields Medalist, Helena Nader, president of the ABC (Brazilian Academy of Sciences), and physicist Luiz Davidovich, professor emeritus at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and former president of the ABC, will participate in a round table discussion about the researcher's legacy.
