The 18th OBMEP breaks record for participating schools and municipalities.

The largest scientific competition in the country, the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP), grew even more this year. Organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) , OBMEP broke two records: the number of schools, with 55,300 institutions, and the number of municipalities, with an incredible 5,563 cities – reaching 99.87% of Brazilian municipalities. In total, more than 18.3 million students will participate in the competition.

In the 17th edition of the Olympiad, held in 2022, 54,488 schools registered and 18.1 million students participated. The Olympiad is aimed at students from the Fridays grade of elementary school to the Tuesdays year of high school.

The competition saw an increase in the number of medals.

The novelty this year was the increase in the number of medals. Nationally, 650 gold, 1,950 silver, and 5,850 bronze medals will be distributed to participants. The Olympiad awards public and private schools separately, and this year it doubled the number of awards for private schools.

Students who win national medals are invited to participate in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC) as an incentive and to promote academic development. Participants from public schools receive an incentive grant of R$ 300 to participate in the program. The value of the grant awarded by CNPq was adjusted this year, with a 200% increase.

In addition to the traditional national awards, the top performers from each federative unit will also receive awards. The organization will offer at least 20,500 regional medals. The number will be calculated according to the performance of each federative unit. The delivery of the regional awards will be the responsibility of each coordinating body and does not grant access to the PIC (Program for Competitiveness and Innovation).

Holding the 18th OBMEP

The Olympiad takes place in two phases: the first consists of a multiple-choice test with 20 questions, and the second consists of an essay test with 6 questions.

The first phase of OBMEP will be on May 30th, and those who qualify for the next stage will take the second phase exam on October 7th.

The tests are prepared according to the student's grade level: Level 1 (Fridays and 7th grades), Level 2 (8th and 9th grades), and Level 3 (High School). The list of those approved for the second stage will be released on August Mondays, and the winners will be announced on December 20th.

Created by IMPA in 2005 and held with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).

OBMEP contributes to stimulating the study of mathematics in Brazil, identifying talented young people, and promoting social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge. Furthermore, the Olympiad seeks to improve the quality of basic education, enabling a greater number of Brazilian students to have access to quality educational materials.
