Students take the first phase of OBMEP this Tuesday (30)

More than 18.3 million students from all regions of the country are participating in the first phase of the 18th Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP) , this Tuesday (30). Held by IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) , the initiative is the largest scientific competition in the country and reaches, in this edition, 99.87% of Brazilian municipalities and more than 55,000 schools.

In this first phase, the tests will be administered and graded by the schools themselves, according to regulations. Students will have 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the 20 questions on the exam, which is prepared at three levels according to the student's grade level: Level 1 (Fridays and 7th grades), Level 2 (8th and 9th grades), and Level 3 (High School). Students with disabilities will have three and a half hours to complete the test. The Olympiad regulations are available on the website .

Educational institutions must send the answer sheets of students who qualified for the second phase by June 12th, via mail, or preferably through the OBMEP app, available for download on the Google Play Store or Apple Store, starting May 30th. The list of candidates approved for the next and final stage will be released on August Mondays. The second phase of the Olympiad will be held at locations previously announced by OBMEP. The exam consists of 6 essay questions and is scheduled for October 7th.

The novelty of this edition was the increase in the number of medals. Nationally, 650 gold, 1,950 silver, and 5,850 bronze medals will be distributed to participants. The Olympiad awards public and private schools separately, and this year, the number of awards for private schools has doubled. In addition to 8,400 gold, silver, or bronze medals offered throughout the country, at least another 20,500 medals will be distributed regionally.

Students who win national medals are invited to participate in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC) as an incentive and to promote academic development. Participants from public schools receive an incentive grant of R$ 300 to participate in the program. The value of the grant awarded by CNPq was adjusted this year, with a 200% increase.

About OBMEP

Created by IMPA in 2005 and held with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC). Aimed at students from the Fridays grade of elementary school to the Tuesdays year of high school, OBMEP contributes to stimulating the study of mathematics and identifying young talents in the discipline.

Furthermore, the Olympiad aims to contribute to improving the quality of basic education, enabling a greater number of Brazilian students to have access to quality educational materials.
