Stone brings young mathematical talents to IMPA.

Cecília Mileski, a 3rd year high school student, was one of 12 young people who visited IMPA last Thursday (12), during the “Potencializa Week” program, promoted by the payment company Stone for talented young people in the exact sciences field.

Gold medalist in the 16th and 17th OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools), Mileski says she is determined to pursue a degree that “has a lot of mathematics.” The visit to IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) was the young woman's first contact with the work of researchers in the field.

“IMPA is very beautiful, even more so because everywhere you look there is nature! We visited the library and also saw the research of some students at the Pi Center. It was really cool because I could see mathematics being done in practice,” commented Cecília, who also won a bronze medal at the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM).

At the institute, they were received by the deputy director of IMPA and general coordinator of OBMEP, Claudio Landim, who commented on the importance of the Olympiad in identifying new talents, and by researcher Lucas Nissenbaum, who showed them the work carried out at the Pi Center (IMPA's Center for Projects and Innovation) .

Enchanted by the tranquility and nature surrounding the institute, the group also explored IMPA's library, which has the largest collection of mathematical books and periodicals in Latin America, the reading room, and the researchers' offices.

The project selected young people from all over Brazil to participate in an immersion in the world of entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation. The group visited laboratories in Rio de Janeiro, participated in discussions with experts and entrepreneurs, carried out practical activities, and solved challenges. In addition, the students received individual mentoring.

The students also visited PUC-Rio, the Museum of Tomorrow, and Christ the Redeemer. In total, seven medalists from the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM), three from the Brazilian Informatics Olympiad (OBI), and two from the Alpha Lumen Institute participated.
