Statement from IMPA and SBM regarding ICM2022 in Russia.

During the General Assembly of the International Mathematical Union held in São Paulo in 2018, it was decided that the next world congress, ICM2022, would be held in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since then, a group of Russian organizers has dedicated themselves with admirable commitment to preparing this event, facing the enormous difficulties imposed by the pandemic, and creating the conditions for a highly successful event. The Brazilian mathematical community is immensely grateful to these professionals for all their effort and dedication to this difficult task.

Unfortunately, recent events regarding the political and military situation in Ukraine have drastically changed this scenario. Russia's aggressive actions on Ukrainian territory have been condemned worldwide. The Brazilian mathematical community also strongly condemns these acts of aggression and calls for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

Given this situation of great political instability and this climate of insecurity, it is unthinkable that any Brazilian researchers and students would participate in any scientific event in person in Russia, including ICM2022. The Brazilian Society of Mathematics (SBM) and the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) recommend that all Brazilian researchers and students cancel their in-person participation in ICM and all satellite events held in the Russian Federation.
