Initiatives of different formats can be submitted: art, citizen science, education, print or digital journalism, digital media, museums, events, programs, radio and television. Projects that do not fit the classic definition of science communication, as well as multidisciplinary projects, will also be accepted.

“One of the main objectives of Camp Serrapilheira is to map science outreach initiatives that bring new ways of talking about the role of science in building our history and our thinking,” explains the Director of Science Outreach, Natasha Felizi. “We want to draw the attention of the public and the scientific community itself to the importance of going beyond academic boundaries when addressing scientific topics.”

After participating in the Camp, the 35 selected participants are invited to develop and present science outreach projects to Serrapilheira. In the second stage, up to 14 initiatives will be awarded support of up to R$ 100,000 each to invest in making the selected project viable.

In 2018, some of the projects that received support were 37 graus , a podcast in the style of an audio documentary with a focus on science; Cientista Beta , which brings scientific initiation to high school and encourages students to become researchers; and BORI, an agency that will bridge the gap between Brazilian scientists and journalists to disseminate research produced in the country.
