Serrapilheira is selecting candidates for support of up to R$ 700,000.

In its 5th public call for science funding , the Serrapilheira Institute will select up to 10 young scientists with original and ambitious projects that contribute to fundamental knowledge in mathematics, computer science, and natural sciences. The funding amounts range from R$ 200,000 to R$ 700,000 and will be distributed over 3 years, with the possibility of extension. Applications will be open from October 16th to November 26th, and the complete call for proposals is already available.

To be eligible for funding, applicants must have a permanent affiliation with a research institution in Brazil and have completed their doctorate between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2019. This period is extended by up to two years for women with children. Each candidate may only submit one proposal per call for proposals and a maximum of two proposals during the entire eligibility period.

Selected scientists will also be eligible to voluntarily apply for additional funding to be invested exclusively in the integration and training of people from underrepresented groups within their teams. The bonus amount will depend on the action to be developed and may vary from 10% to 30% of the initial support offered. The method for implementing the inclusion actions will be discussed with each selected scientist.

The selection process takes place in two stages. In the first stage, candidates submit a preliminary proposal, which will be evaluated by the executive team. From there, some will be invited to submit the complete proposal. The final stage includes an interview.

“We encourage young scientists to think of Serrapilheira as an institution willing to support projects involving risky strategies, as long as they are very well-founded scientifically,” explains Cristina Caldas, science director of the institute.

Since May 2020, IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, has held the position of President of the Scientific Council , now called the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), and is also on the institute's Administrative Council. IMPA researcher Vinicius Ramos was one of those selected by the 1st Public Call for Support for Scientific Research from Serrapilheira in 2017. And researcher Luna Lomonaco was awarded funding in the institute's 2nd Call in 2019.

Founded in 2017, the Serrapilheira Institute is the first private, non-profit institution dedicated to promoting science in Brazil. The organization aims to value scientific knowledge and increase its visibility, and to this end, it operates on two fronts: Science and Science Communication.
