SBMAC awards prize for article on complex problems.

Prêmio Kepler destina R$ 10 mil a matemáticos e áreas correlatas

The Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC) has created an award for academic publications by researchers in mathematical sciences and related fields that address complex real-world problems. Applications for the first edition of the Johannes Kepler Prize opened on October 1Wednesdays and will be accepted until March 1st, 2020. The authors of the winning paper will receive a diploma certified by SBMAC and R$ 10,000, to be divided only among researchers working in Brazil.

Inspired by the slogan "SBMAC in the Interdependent Knowledge Society," the award aims to promote and encourage national scientific production of excellence in Applied Mathematics, with multidisciplinary characteristics.

Johannes Kepler is considered the first data scientist in human history. The German mathematician and astronomer was a key figure in the scientific revolution of the 17th century. To compete for the prize honoring the academic, articles published between 2010 and 2019 in internationally circulated journals with recognized editorial boards will be accepted, dedicated to topics that have a strong interaction between mathematics and another field of scientific knowledge.

At least one of the authors must be professionally employed in Brazil, and at least two of them must have training in distinct research areas, one of which must be closely related to mathematics. Applications must be submitted by the researchers themselves, exclusively via email to kepler@sbmac.org.br. The complete regulations are available on the SBMAC website .

The Johannes Kepler Prize Judging Committee will be composed of José Mário Martínez, Abimael Loula, André de Carvalho, Nair Abreu, and Pablo Ferrari. The results will be published by July 31, 2020.
