Rio's Secretary of Environment and Climate visits IMPA headquarters.

The Secretary of Environment and Climate of Rio de Janeiro, Tainá de Paula, visited the IMPA headquarters this Tuesday (7) to talk and get information about the institute's new sustainable campus project. She was received by the general director, Marcelo Viana, the architect Vinicius Andrade and technicians responsible for the compensatory measure, already completed, which planted more than 5,500 Atlantic Forest seedlings on the land.

The institute's team detailed to the secretary the interventions in the first phase of the project, which aim to provide greater water security to the land and the Horto region. Drainage, containment, and earthmoving works are underway, within the timeframe stipulated in the project approved by public agencies.

The technicians also noted that, by decision of IMPA, the compensatory measure was brought forward and carried out from May to July of last year. In total, 5,529 native seedlings of the Atlantic Forest were planted on the land. They are monitored and receive constant maintenance.

Architect Vinicius Andrade presented the project's history, from the initial site visits to the granting of the building permit. Andrade demonstrated how the architectural structure was designed to minimize its impact on the landscape and the physical environment. Occupying less than 3.5% of the total land area, the building was planned to occupy the site of a former quarry. The four linear pavilions are arranged along the curves of the terrain; the structures are lightweight and elevated on pillars. The green roof, which will cover the buildings, will integrate the pavilions with the local vegetation.

During the visit, the director-general of IMPA detailed the institute's work in four main pillars: scientific research, training of masters, doctoral and teacher students, holding the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools), and partnerships with companies and the public sector to develop new technologies based on mathematics. Viana explained that the expansion of the campus aims to expand these activities and provide better study and work conditions for students.

Secretary Tainá de Paula stated that the city government understands the need to expand the institute with the construction of the new campus, and highlighted that SMAC is closely monitoring the project.
