Rio de Janeiro hosts the 25th SAET Conference at IMPA

After a decade, Rio de Janeiro will once again host one of the most prestigious meetings in world economic theory: the SAET Conference on Current Trends in Economics. In its 25th edition, which is organized by IMPA researcher emeritus Aloisio Araujo and Nicholas Yannelis, from the University of Iowa, the event will be held between July 13 and 17, 2026, at IMPA. Registration is open for researchers on the website.

Renowned for bringing together some of the leading names in theoretical economics, the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory (SAET) conference has established itself over more than three decades as a central space for the advancement of economic thought. Created in 1993 as a biennial meeting, the conference has become annual since 2010, reflecting the growing vitality and expansion of the field.

The 2026 edition will be particularly symbolic. The program will include a tribute to the 80th birthday of Aloisio Araujo, a central figure in the development of economic theory in Brazil and an international reference in the field. The special celebration will take place on July 18, right after the conference closes.

The meeting will feature a line-up of globally renowned speakers, including two Nobel Prize winners in economics: Christopher A. Pissarides (London School of Economics and University of Cyprus) and James J. Heckman (University of Chicago). Completing the list are Piotr Dworczak (Northwestern University), M. Ali Khan (Johns Hopkins University) and Michael Woodford (Columbia University), names that are among the most influential economists today.

The program covers central themes of contemporary economic theory, such as game theory, general equilibrium, industrial organization, macroeconomics, international trade and public finance, promoting an environment of intense academic exchange and international collaboration.
